With the season of giving in full swing, the public is encouraged to give back to honor the lives of two late Carter County residents.
Representatives from the American Red Cross are putting on the final touches for the second annual blood drive to commemorate the lives of Dana and Sara Keeling on Saturday, Dec. 23, at First Baptist Church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Having the ability to host the drive for a second consecutive year has been an exciting feeling, according to Emma Grindstaff. Grindstaff, the mother of Dana and grandmother of Sara, has worked with other volunteers in the community to distribute information about the drive.
An aspiring phlebotomist, Dana and her daughter tragically lost their lives in a house fire a little over a year ago at Pine Ridge Circle.
“The community is wonderful,” Grindstaff told the Elizabethton Star after last year’s event. “The amount of people that are coming out is amazing. People didn’t even know the girls but we have people here that want to give back in their honor and use this as a way to give back to possibly save someone’s life. I just don’t know what to say, I’m so excited.”
Tom Hensley, with the American Red Cross, stated that last year’s drive created 63 life-saving products that were able to be used by individuals. For this year’s event, with a change of location, the goal is have over 50 come through the door, which could create near 40 products.
“This is a busy time of the year and I can’t say enough about the willingness of everyone who is coming together to put this event on just a few days before Christmas,” Hensley said. “This event is something I’ve enjoyed being part of. Emma has been incredible to work with. This is a story that got to me … it can happen to anyone and she’s wanting to do this to give back to the community. The Red Cross was more than happy to help and we’re looking forward to this year’s drive.”
Hensley added the winter months prove to be a pivotal time to accept donations of blood.
“We had some snow a few weeks back and that cancelled quite a few blood drives we had planned,” Hensley said. “It only takes an hour of your time. I’d encourage anyone who has time to stop by and donate if possible. Not only is this a way to save a life, but it is the perfect way to help remember the lives of Dana and Sara.”
Over the past two months, Grindstaff and family members were able to remember the lives of Dana and Sara with special balloon release ceremonies at their gravesite. While the months have been tough, Grindstaff recently added she’s grateful for the support and to see Dana and Sara continue to be remembered for their impact within the community.
