Finances continue to stay in sound shape for Elizabethton City Schools.

City Board of Education members convened Tuesday evening at Central Office for a relatively cut-and-dry meeting, and learned more about the school district’s clean audit findings for 2017.

The audit, performed by Blackburn, Childers & Steagall, continues a trend for the school system of having relatively clean results for finances.

“In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the respective financial position of the governmental activities and each major fund of the Elizabethton City Schools, a component of the City of Elizabethton, Tennessee, as of June 30, 2017,” the report read.

Dr. Corey Gardenhour and the rest of BOE commended the efforts Beth Wilson director of finance and business for ECS and staff for another successful audit year.

Wilson was quick to dish out praise to everyone else involved, including bookkeepers at each of the schools. Wilson added this was the first year for new bookkeepers at West Side, East Side and Harold McCormick elementary schools.

A topic for discussion at the 2018 board meeting will be geared toward board policies and the potential of eliminating the term “corporal punishment” from possible punishment measures for students.

Tuesday marked the Board’s last meeting before 2018. Director of Schools Director Dr. Corey Gardenhour added the upcoming year will be busy, but productive for the school system as various projects will be looked at while continually bolstering the projects and plans already in place.

One of the ongoing projects underway by the school system is a fundraising initiative to kickstart an art space inside Elizabethton High School. Due to an increase in arts and other programs offered at the school, the system is looking at create an area to be utilized by drama, band, and Bartleby students.
