With 2018 around the bend, the Elizabethton Board of Education will attend to a few housekeeping measures.

Officials will meet at Central Office on Tuesday, Dec. 18, to go through a relatively small agenda, featuring some good reports for the school district’s finances.

Elizabethton City Schools recently received the results from Blackburn, Childers & Steagall PLC for a pair of audit reports on two different items – Financial Statements and Supplement Information and Internal School Funds for Regulatory Basis.

According to both reports, the opinions from the auditors netted positive results for the school system.

In other business, the BOE will look to vote on approving the creation of a part time cook position at West Side Elementary and the approval of an RTI Specialist position, whose salaried would be funded through Title I.

The BOE also received a boost in the momentum of development of phase two of renovations at T.A. Dugger Junior High with City Council voting to approval the measure of using $50,000 from the half-cent sales tax to fund designs from Thomas Weems’ architect firm Thursday evening.

City Director of Schools Dr. Corey Gardenhour addressed Council members and mentioned the goal of the designs to help make sure there aren’t any “big surprises” before construction due to the age of the facility.

Renovations at T.A. Dugger have been underway since last year. The school system was able to demolish the grandstands at Brown Childress Stadium before the start of the 2017-18 school year to prepare for expansion.

Improvements call for additional classrooms for STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – classes, parts of the building be connected for handicapped accessibility, improvement and add restrooms and demolish portable classrooms that are “20 years past their life expectancy,” according to the system.

BOE will also recognize members of the EHS Graduation Class of 1957 and hear a report from East Side Elementary Principal Travis Hurley.
