With the holiday season in full swing, area children are looking at ways to give back to the senior population.
Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition, Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library, UT – Extension are Elizabethton Parks and Recreation are putting the final touches on the second annual Christmas Senior Breakfast, scheduled to take place Thursday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. at the City’s Recreation Center.
Having the ability to offer an event of this magnitude means a lot for the children participating and gives the elderly population a chance to enjoy togetherness for the holiday season, according to CCDP Director Jilian Reece.
“Last year, Ashlee (Williams) and I felt led to do something for the many seniors in our community that may be lonely or just looking for things to do during this holiday season,” Reece said. “This is one of the monthly homeschool events sponsored by the different agencies.”
Homeschoolers from the Tri-Cities Homeschool Playdate and Discussion Group will be pair with seniors during the day for a healthy breakfast and social interaction. Parks & Rec is offering the space while UT Extension with provide the food. Library staff and CCDP are providing crafts and activities for children and seniors to work on at different stations.
“We’re also excited to provide Count It, Lock It, Drop It! Education to grandparents who attend on keeping their medications secure,” Reece added.
Spots are still available for seniors in Carter County and Elizabethton.
“Everything is free and any community member is invited to attend,” Reece said. “We also invite any church or senior living facilities to bring groups. We’re so excited about providing this opportunity again to the public.”
Attendees are asked to registration before Thursday. Registration can take place by either contacting Reece with CCDP or by contacting the public library.
