The Elizabethton wrestling team is starting to turn heads.
Tuesday evening, the boy’s team went undefeated as they topped Sullivan East (54-30), Volunteer (42-33), and Sullivan South (72-6) during a meet at Elizabethton High School.
“You know last year, Sullivan East was really the dominant force in our conference,” said Elizabethton co-coach Eddie Morrell. “We have worked hard and was able to beat them convincingly. We have had some really hard work on the mat. We were able to score maximum points when we could.”
Against East, Elizabethton’s Hunter Morrell, Kilroy Hill, Kobe Bryant, Deuce Morton, Alex Conley, Cory Lawson, and Joesph Ketcher all had pins.
Just like against East, the Cyclones had dominant performances against Volunteer as Bryant, Morton, Taylor, Morrell, and Hill all topped their opponents by pins.
Hill raised eyebrows during his Volunteer match as he backed rolled from the ground before quickly getting the upper hand on his opponent and pinning them.
“When he flips a switch, he goes,” said EHS co-coach TravisPennell. “He goes to what he knows, and he is very technical on his moves. He works the match. The match doesn’t work him.”
Just like Hill, Morrell controlled his Volunteer match before making the pin.
“There is a reason he is 10-0 with ten pins,” said Morrell. “He takes wrestling very seriously. He works his tail off and listens to his coaches. He does what is expected for his team.”
On the girl’s side of the mat, EHS’ ShaMia Wells went 2-for-2 as she made two pins.
“ShaMia is starting to come around to her mid-season form,” said Wells. “We have seen a lot of work out of her in the practice room. It is starting to show.”
Wells’ teammate Haley Brown had two close matches but fell in both after close decisions.
“We couldn’t be more proud of Haley for the work she has put in,” said Morrell. “She has dropped almost 14 pounds and done it the right way. She is a little shorter for her weight class, so she is starting to explore other avenues. She is working different moves and becoming a more technical wrestler.”
