From Elizabethton to Nashville, Jeff Woods’ love of the state and the University of Tennessee has never wavered.
And now college football fans across the country can take notice.
The Elizabethton native recently provided his voice on the music video for “We Are Volunteers,” a song spotlighting the University the of Tennessee and will be included on an album created by SEC Country, a national media outlet that covered athletics for each collegiate team in the Southeastern Conference.
“It was a great opportunity,” Woods told the Elizabethton Star. “I live in Nashville and was approached to perform a song that was written by Alex Smith and Mike Lahey. Ever since I was little, I’ve always been a fan of the University of Tennessee.”
“We Are Volunteers” was filmed by Zachary Will at two different locations, Gatlinburg and Knoxville. While a portion of the video was shot near Neyland Stadium, the other portion was shot near some areas of Gatlinburg that were affected by wildfires approximately one year ago.
Woods said the video is used as a way to highlight the volunteer spirit of people from the state, from the first responders that assisted during the incident, to citizens’ who go above and beyond each day to give back to their fellow man.
“Like the song says, ‘From Bristol to Memphis’ and ‘New York to Texas’, we wanted to highlight those that do so much for us,” he said. “That’s what it means to be from Tennessee. Having that volunteer spirit and doing what you can for others.
The video was also a tribute to best friend Tyler Lowe, Woods said.
“He tragically passed away recently,” he explained. “He was my best friend. He was from Knoxville and co-wrote some of my songs. He’d give you the shirt of his back and do what we could to help. He really embodied what it meant to be a volunteer and we thought this would be the perfect way to remember him.”
The video was released SEC Country YouTube account on Tuesday, Nov. 14, and the song is now available for purchase through different music retailers.
Woods indicated that the song will be featured on an album released by SEC Country. The outlet is currently comprising songs to have full-length albums for each school in the conference.
But the impact of the video won’t be going away anytime soon, he added. If the video picks up enough viral traffic, the possibility looms of “We Are Volunteers” to be played during football games at Neyland Stadium and other athletic events on campus.
“We definitely appreciate the support everyone has given to the video,” Woods said.
Individuals are encouraged to watch the video on the SEC Country YouTube page and share the video on different social media accounts.
As far as the future goes for Woods, the former Elizabethton Cyclone indicated he’s in the process of wrapping up his next album.
