Educating the future generation is a key component of developing a sense of pride, hard work and dedication to family, friends and culture. Students from Elizabethton High School and Happy Valley High School each had the opportunity to learn from men and women that served during a pair of Veterans Day ceremonies held Friday, Nov. 10, at each school. At Happy Valley, the Elizabethton/Carter County United Veterans Council with have their annual Veterans Day program, which included the POW/MIA Empty Chair ceremony, a reading of “In Flanders Field”, a playing of TAPS and a flag folding ceremony.

“This ceremony is done annually at a different high school in the county to recognize veterans and to remind our young people of the sacrifices that have been made to make this country what it is today,” David Batchelder, Carter County Veterans Service Officer, said.

Over at Elizabethton High, Ryan Presnell, Travis Thompson, Patrick Roberts, Ken Wiley and HC Moretz each spoke to students to recognize veterans day. The EHS Chorus and Betsy also provided music throughout the day.
