Carter County 4-H members capture honors in competitions

Members of Carter County 4-H have been busy in recent months demonstrating their skills and knowledge at a variety of events and competitions.

“4-H judging teams and shows teach young people life skills in areas such as ethical decision making, responsibility, teamwork, and communication as well as content knowledge in the specific area,” said Emily Barton, Extension Agent and 4-H Youth Development coordinator at the Carter County UT Extension Office. “Each year, Carter County 4-H members, families, and volunteers host a wide variety of events to build life skills for youth in Carter County.”

On Saturday, August 5th, Carter County 4-H Chick Chain members exhibited their black sex-link laying hens at the 4-H Multi-County Poultry Show and Sale. Members were Lacey Smith, Seth Bauer, Hannah Monroe, Matthew Wilson, Caleb Royston, Chloe Watson, Braylon Campbell, Brogen Cambell, and Carabeth Chrisawn.

Hannah Monroe received Reserved Grand Champion and Lacey Smith received Grand Champion for their hens.

“We are so proud of the dedication and lifeskills these students displayed,” Barton said.

Carter County 4-H Chick Chain information will be available in November for next season. The 4-H Chick Chain program is coached by Melissa Shelton.

Later that day at the Tri-Cities 4-H Goat Show, Brilee Culbert and her dairy doe, Shadow, represented Carter County 4-H. She received Senior Showmanship Champion along with Reserve Champion Dairy Doe.

Carter County 4-H was also well represented at the Appalachian Fair.  Many students entered a wide variety of exhibits in the Appalachian Fair 4-H building, earning various ribbons, recognition, and prize premiums. On Friday night, three 4-H Breadbaking Teams prepared scratch-made biscuits in the 4-H Demonstration Kitchen at the Appalachian Fair. Team members were: Gracyn Carder, Hannah Monroe, Ben Geib, Nathan Hedges, Baylei Ritchie, Jeremiah Bowling, Alana Parsons, Hope Gilford, Sarah Gilford, and Michelle Boucher. The 4-H Breadbaking teams were coached by Emily Barton.

On Saturday, August 26th, two Carter County 4-H teams represented Carter County at the Eastern Region Outdoor Meat Cookery contest. In this contest, students exhibit mastery of charcoal grilling skills and grill a specific cut of meat.

Jesse Carr placed 7th high individual in the Senior High Pork Division.

Alayna Turbyfield placed 6th high individual in the Senior High Poultry Division.

Kaci Ritchie placed 5th high individual in the Senior High Beef Division.

Brilee Culbert placed 8th high individual in the Senior High Lamb Division

Jordan James placed 10th high individual in the Junior High Lamb Division

Kaitlyn James placed 7th high individual in the Junior High Poultry Division

Nathan Hedges placed 9th high individual in the Junior High Pork Division

Jeremiah Bowling placed 11th high individual in the Junior High Beef Division

The 4-H Outdoor Meat Cookery Team was coached by Melissa Shelton.

Moving on to September, Carter County 4-H members represented Carter County at the Tennessee Valley Fair in Knoxville. Several members exhibited photography in the 4-H Photography Contest. On Saturday, September 9th, Carter County 4-H members competed in the Eastern Region 4-H Forestry Contest and the Eastern Region Poultry Judging Invitational.

4-H Poultry Judging team members were Jordan James, Kaitlyn James, Matthew Wilson, and Seth Bauer. The Poultry Judging team was coached by Melissa Shelton.  4-H Forestry Judging team members were Harlee Black, Johnathan Rankhorn, Kaci Ritchie, Alayna Turbyfield, Haley Rankhorn, and John Tapp. Forestry Senior Team A, Kaci Ritchie, Alayna Turbyfield, Haley Rankhorn, and John Tapp, placed 4th overall and earned the chance to compete at the Tennessee State 4-H Forestry Contest. Alayna Turbyfield placed 6th high individual and Kaci Ritchie placed 10th high individual. The forestry team was coached by: Bill Meredith, Buddy Farmer, Keith Hart, and Jesse Carr.
