A Carter County man faces multiple charges following an investigation by the Carter County Sheriff’s Office into a string of burglaries at Hampton businesses earlier this week.
Deputies of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dante Allen Brown, 19, 103 Dugger St., Hampton, on Wednesday and charged him with three counts of burglary and three counts of vandalism.
The charges against Brown stem from an investigation into reports of break-ins at three Hampton businesses. On Tuesday morning, Michael Harrald, owner of Mikes Garage at 753 Highway 321, and Gary Shingleton, who owns a garage at 816 Highway 321, told officers a male subject had broken into their businesses. That same morning, Sutton Brown, owner of Browns’ Hardware and Grocery, located at 613 Highway 321, told officers someone had attempted to break into his store.
All three business owners also reported damage to their property as a result of the burglaries.
Both Harrald and Shingleton told officers video surveillance equipment at their garages had captured images of the individual. According to court documents, the security camera footage shows the suspect, later identified as Brown, enter Mike’s Garage at 6 p.m. and going through desk drawers, attempting to get into a safe, and using the computer in the office. Brown remained inside the business for about an hour according to police reports.
Security camera footage from the garage owned by Shingleton shows the suspect breaking a window shortly after 8 p.m., according to court documents.
According to court documents, after viewing the security camera footage and talking with several individuals, deputies were able to identify the suspect. Deputies obtained warrants and arrested Brown on Wednesday in connection with the three break-ins.
Brown appeared in Carter County General Sessions Court on Friday and was arraigned on the charges against him. Judge Keith Bowers Jr. appointed the Public Defenders Office to represent Brown and scheduled him to return to court on Sept. 25.
Brown’s arrest on Wednesday marks the third time in less than a month he has been charged in connection with burglary or theft incidents in the Hampton area.
On August 23, deputies arrested Brown and charged him theft under $1,000. According to court documents in that case, Brown allegedly stole a 50cc motorcycle and was found in possession of the vehicle by its owner.
The following day, on August 24, deputies arrested Brown and charged him with burglary and vandalism in connection with an investigation into a break-in at Hampton High School’s concession stand.
Brown is scheduled to appear in Carter County General Sessions Court on Oct. 6 on both of those pending cases.
