F.D. Sams, 87, of Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at Hillview Health Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Huey and Carrie Blevins Sams.
Mr. Sams served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He had lived in Gary, Ind., for several years where he retired from US Steel. He was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include his children, Phyllis Constantine and husband Jim, Burns Harbor, Ind., Floyd Douglas Sams and wife Debra, Normangee, Texas, David Brian Sams, Elizabethton, and Madelyn Louise Gunn, Gilmer, Texas; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; the mother of his children, Blannie Ritchie Sams; four sisters, JoAnn Waycaster, Polly McPeake and husband Terry, Diane Pleasant and husband Don, and Willa “Tootsie” Hill, all of Elizabethton; and four brothers, John Sams and wife Penny, Elizabethton, Tommy Sams and wife Barbara and Eddie Sams and wife Shirley, all of Watauga, and Freddie Sams and wife Pat, Blythwood, S.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for F.D. Sams will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 5, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Burleson officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Terry McPeake, Doug Sams, Dave Sams, Eddie Sams, Donald Pleasant, Jim Williams, Nolan Miller and Chris Slagle. The family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at the residence of a sister, JoAnn Waycaster, Elizabethton.
