Family fun will be in full swing this weekend at Covered Bridge Park.
Elizabethton Parks and Recreation, WBEJ Radio and the Elizabethton Lions Club are finalizing the process of presenting the second annual “Show on the Doe” Saturday, Aug. 26, beginning at 7 p.m.
“It’ll be a great night full of family-friendly entertainment,” Mike Mains, Parks & Rec director, told the Elizabethton Star Thursday.
Carson Peters and Iron Mountain start the celebration by performing for the finale of Covered Bridge Jams — held at the stage of the park. The set is expected to last until 9 p.m. as a projection screen will be unveiled to showcase a family-friendly movie.
Attendees are encouraged to come early and bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the night out in the city, Mains said.
Elizabethton Lions Club saw success last year from the event by providing a concession stand. Saturday, members will sell popcorn, drinks and other goodies with proceeds going to benefit different projects in the community.
“This is one of our biggest events and we’re really looking forward to it,” said Nathanael Hughes, Lions Club president. “The Lions Club was rekindled a couple of years ago and we’re excited to have different community pillars being involved with the organization. Saturday will be a great time. We’re looking forward to interacting with the community and getting to know more people.”
Hughes added the mission of the Lions Club is to provide assistance with individuals with impaired vision and the goal moving forward is to grow the group.
“We’re always looking for new members,” he added. “This event is one of our biggest fundraisers but we also do different projects, including beautification around the city and giving back to the children of the community. We’ll have applications available Saturday for anybody interested in wanting to become a member of the group.”
Along with Saturday’s event, individuals wanting to participate in the Lions Club can either attend a meeting — the second and last Thursday of each month at noon inside Beef ‘O’ Brady’s — or contact Carol Forrester at (423) 543-5050.
Mains also commended the effort of the organization.
“Having the support of the Elizabethton Lions Club has made this event possible and we greatly appreciate them teaming up with us to make this event happen,” he said. “The setting with the Covered Bridge in the background and the Doe River running through our park makes this event even more enjoyable.”
Saturday may be the finale of Covered Bridge Jams, but don’t expect action to slow down for the Parks & Rec crew.
Next Saturday, the department will be hosting the annual Tweetsie Trail Treasure Trip, an event geared to showcase the Tweetsie Trail and the history of the community. Once attendees finish up on the Tweetsie Trail, various activities will be available at Covered Bridge Park.
