A Butler man faces a felony charge after police say he fired a shotgun out of a moving vehicle while chasing another car.
Deputies of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested George Sherman Robinson, 265 Main St., Butler, on Monday night and charged him with felony reckless endangerment.
According to court documents, deputies responded to Highway 321 in Hampton after a person called 911 and reported they were being chased by another vehicle and the other driver was firing a gun.
CCSO Lt. Larry Vaughn made contact with the person who called 911 at the Rat Branch Boat Ramp while CCSO Deputy Robert Hughes followed the suspect vehicle.
“I conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver, Mr. George S. Robinson, who stated to me that he had seen some individuals attempting to burglarize his property and when he yelled at them they fled in a vehicle,” Hughes said. “Mr. Robinson stated at that time he gave chase to the vehicle and admittedly fired a shotgun from his moving vehicle into a roadside bank in an attempt to scare the (individuals) from coming to his property again.”
Hughes recovered a pistol-grip pump-action shotgun from the passenger side floorboard of Robinson’s vehicle and noted there was a discharged shell in the chamber as well as another round in the magazine tube.
While Hughes was speaking with Robinson, Vaughn spoke with the individuals who had called 911, who were identified as Will Humphreys and Patricia Humphreys. Both individuals told Vaughn they had been out riding around when they turned around in the parking lot of the country store just past the Butler Bridge and headed back toward Hampton.
“They each stated at that time they observed a vehicle coming up behind them at a high rate of speed and tailgating them,” Hughes said. “Mr. Humphreys stated that he attempted to speed up in an attempt to get distance from the vehicle. and as they approached the area of the Butler Bridge they heard what they believed to be gunshots coming from the area of the vehicle following them.”
Patricia Humphreys called 911 and stayed on the phone with dispatchers until they made contact with Vaughn at Rat Branch.
Deputies arrested Robinson and transported him to the Carter County Detention Center.
Robinson appeared in court on Tuesday morning for arraignment with his attorney Perry Stout.
Stout requested the court lower Robinson’s bond, citing Robinson was a life-long resident of Johnson County with “deep ties to the community.” Stout said Robinson’s property was located in Johnson County so he would not be able to make a property bond in the case.
Judge Keith Bowers Jr. asked the District Attorney’s Office what their position was regarding Robinson’s bond.
“I do think the conduct was reckless, and indeed felonious,” said Assistant District Attorney Ryan Curtis, adding the State felt Robinson should have to post some form of bond in order to be released from jail.
Bowers set Robinson’s bond at $1,000 and ordered that as a condition of his bond he have no contact with Will Humphreys or with Patricia Humphreys.
Following his court appearance on Tuesday, Robinson posted bond and was released from the Carter County Detention Center.
