For the second year in a row, Carter County Bank has awarded a special scholarship to a graduating senior in honor of the bank’s former President, the late Duncan Street.
On Thursday evening, Cloudland High School hosted their awards ceremony. During the event, Carter County Bank’s Senior Customer Experience Officer Brian Tipton presented this year’s scholarship to John Phillip Buchanan.
The Duncan I. Street Scholarship Endowment from Carter County Bank’s parent company Bank of Tennessee grants a $1,000 scholarship to a student graduating from Cloudland High School who will be continuing their education at East Tennessee State University.
“Duncan was an alumnus of both Cloudland and ETSU,” said Carter County Market President Andrew McKeehan.
In addition to being a graduating senior from Cloudland who will attend ETSU, the applicants must also meet other criteria, such as a documented financial need and a preferred grade point average of 2.0 upon graduation from high school.
“The $1,000 is renewable for four years as long as they continue to meet the criteria,” McKeehan said.
While the bank funded the endowment, a special committee at ETSU selects the recipient for the scholarship.
Following Street’s death, Bank of Tennessee set up the scholarship endowment in honor of Street with an initial $50,000 endowment. The bank has pledged to make annual contributions to allow for the scholarship to be awarded each year.
