A Carter County woman faces multiple charges after police said a citizen caught the woman breaking into a city home Thursday night.
Officers of the Elizabethton Police Department arrested Stacy Hatley, 45, of 180 Little Ave., Elizabethton, no Thursday night and charged her with aggravated burglary, driving on a revoked license, leaving the scene of an accident, theft of property, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday, officers of the Elizabethton Police Department responded to a home in the 200 block of West K Street on a report of a break-in in progress at the home.
When officers arrived at the scene, they met with the resident of the home, who had reported the break-in. The man told the officers he was pulling into the driveway of the home when he saw a vehicle in the driveway that did not belong to him or his girlfriend. He noticed a light on inside the house and then saw a female walk from the rear of the home.
“Witnesses stated that the female subject entered her vehicle in the driveway and began ramming the homeowner’s vehicle in attempts to leave,” said EPD Capt. Joy Shoun. “The female subject reportedly backed up several times until she was able to exit the driveway through the front yard and while entering the street, struck another vehicle at the residence.”
The man was able to provide the officers with a description of the vehicle the woman fled the scene in as well as the car’s tag number.
“Shortly after responding to the scene, officers located a vehicle matching that description on a nearby street, backed in between two houses,” Shoun said. “The vehicle had significant damage, and the driver’s door was seen to be open.”
Officers located a female subject, later identified as Hatley, attempting to hide underneath the car and placed her into custody.
According to Shoun, when Hatley spoke with officers she admitted she had been inside the home but denied taking anything from the residence. Shoun said she also provided officers with a different statement regarding how the vehicle had sustained the damage they observed.
Officers located a television inside of the vehicle that was determined to have been stolen from the residence on West K Street.
Hatley appeared in Carter County General Sessions Court on Friday. Judge Keith Bowers Jr. appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Hatley and scheduled her to return to court on April 28.
