March will be a bustling time of the year for the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library.
ECCPL Director Renita Barksdale announced the facility will host its second ACT testing workshop on Monday, March 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. under the guidance of ACT tutor Amy Schaffner.
“Our last workshop was very success,” Barksdale said. “Our space was limited to 20 students and we were able to have 15 come by. That gave the tutor time to work with each of the students on questions.”
As the programs at the library continue to grow, having the opportunity to hold ACT workshops came with ease according to Barksdale.
High school students looking to register need to email their name, school, and grade to highcountryedu@gmail.com to be included in the sessions. Barksdale encouraged students to register as soon as possible to secure spacing for the event.
The workshops are just another initiative put in place by the library to help stress the importance of education within the county. Barksdale recently announced the library entered into a partnership with Tennessee Reconnect by having McKenzie Todd with Northeast Tennessee Reconnect Community stop by each Thursday to work with adults looking to go back to school.
Along with addressing education, the library is also upping the ante on a success event from last year.
Beginning March 18, the ECCPL is utilizing the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program to allow citizens a chance to prepare their taxes before the upcoming deadline.
“We offered something like this last year,” Barksdale said. “It was a ‘Super Saturday’ where volunteers came in and assisted with tax preparation. It was such a success that we wanted to be able to offer it on multiple days to give people a chance to work on their taxes if they haven’t yet.”
VITA will be available for citizens on March 18, March 25 and April 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. each day. The program is available to individuals that make under $60,000 a year.
Participants are asked to bring photo identification, their social security card, all forms, and any other documents to help the process.
Volunteers will be assisting for one-hour slots during the day, allowing 10 individuals to take part during the session. Interested members of the public wanting to take part can register by contacting the library at (423) 547-6360.
