Nicotine Anonymous, a 12-Step Recovery Program of Mutual Support for those who want to stop smoking or live free of nicotine in any form, will meet at 7 p.m. at the Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition Youth Opportunity Center, 546 East Elk Ave., Elizabethton. The Carter County Proud meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Smoke House BBQ on the Milligan Highway, Elizabethton.
Saturday, Feb. 25
Amateur Radio License Testing will be held from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital Conference Room in Elizabethton. Testing will start at 3:30 p.m. until completion. There will be a $15 fee at testing time. The session is produced by the Carter County Amateur Radio Club, 805 Highway 91, Elizabethton. The study session will be followed by an exam. All materials will be provided. Please bring two forms of ID: one picture ID and some other form of ID. If upgrading an existing Ham License, bring a copy of your current one. Watauga Valley Fife and Drums from 10 a.m. until noon. The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications and parades. This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up. Beginning Sewing workshop from 1 until 4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. Instructor: Donna Horowitz. This is a four-part workshop series meeting on Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 25 and March 4. Cost: $80 for all 4 classes, plus supplies. Learn to sew an easy starter project! Class is designed for true beginners. Topics covered: pattern layout, importance of grain line / seam allowances, pattern terminology and many much more. Student will sew a bathrobe as their project. Please bring: sewing machine and manual, basic sewing supplies, fabric and pattern. Instructor will provide a supply list at the first class.
Sunday, Feb. 26
Old Time Music Jam led by Art Lang from 1:30 until 4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. Enjoy the rich musical traditions of our region each month. Old time musicians of all levels are welcome. Don’t play an instrument? Come on over, kick back, and enjoy the tunes!
Liberty! Auditions will be held at 2 p.m. inside the Visitor’s Center at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. Anyone who has interest in either a speaking or non-speaking role for the outdoor drama as well as those interested in helping out behind the scenes is asked to attend one of two scheduled auditions. Vegetable Gardening with Ben Hunter from 9 a.m. until Noon inside the Visitor’s Center at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. The event is free and advanced registration is not required. Gardener extraordinaire, Ben Hunter, will be joining us to share his experiences and techniques for growing the garden of your dreams! Sponsored by the Northeast Tennessee Master Gardeners.
Sunday, March 5
Dance with History – Join us at the 1st meeting of the Sabine Hill Social Society for an informal English Country dance with beginning lessons taught by instructor Bob Thompson. This event will be held in the Pine Room at Franklin Health & Fitness Center, located behind Sycamore Shoals Hospital, from 1-5 p.m. This event celebrates the kickoff of this new group and is comprised of dedicated volunteers whose focus is on educational events, social activities, early 19th century period clothing assistance, and home tours of Sabine Hill representing the Federalist period of time in America -1790 to 1820. (Note: Sabine Hill is not yet open to the public). Cost at the Door: $7. Light refreshments will be served. Wear casual/comfortable clothing.

Watercolor Painting: Spring Flowers – Still Life. Join instructor Barbara Jernigan to learn and practice watercolor techniques and style. Class will be from 9 a.m. until Noon at the Visitor’s Center at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. Cost is $12 for those bringing their own supplies and $20 with supplies provided.
Beginning Knitting — Join instructor Margaret Crouch for this class from 1-4 p.m. inside the Visitor’s Center at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. The cost for this class is $25 which includes supplies. Knitting is really big right now, and if you haven’t learned yet this is the class for you! You’ll probably finish your project at home, but in class we’ll start at the very beginning and you’ll learn both the knit and purl stitches, as well as how to cast on the yarn for your next project!

Watauga Valley Art League Meeting and Program — Everyone is welcome to join the Watauga Valley Art League for their monthly meetings that feature guest speakers and fellowship with area artists. The meeting will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. WVAL meets the 2nd Sunday of each month, except October.

Overmountain Weavers Guild Fibers Show and Sale — Don’t miss this great opportunity to visit with some of the best fiber artists of our region! If you love fibers, this is the place for you! Demonstrations include weaving, spinning, knitting, natural dyeing, and more. A variety of handmade items will be offered for sale. This event will be held at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Arboretum Ramble – Spring Hike! — Celebrate Spring at Sycamore Shoals State Park! Join retired forester Martin Miller, for a special guided tour of Sycamore Shoals’ arboretum on Saturday, March 18. Discover a variety of native trees and fun facts about their unique qualities, historical uses, and contributions to local culture. Dress appropriately for the weather as we will be taking a casual stroll on the park grounds adjacent to the front parking lot. Meet in the Visitor Center lobby, tour will begin at 11:00 am. Please no pets. Tour is by reservation only and subject to cancellation due to significantly inclement weather. Contact the park for more information at 423-543-5808.

Sycamore Shoals Lecture Series — Dr. Jay Franklin, Professor of Archaeology in the Dept. of Sociology & Anthropology at East Tennessee State University, will present a lecture on Collapse, Coalescence, and Spanish Incursions into 16th Century Native Upper East Tennessee. Cayla Cannon, Graduate Student, in the Dept. of Geosciences at East Tennessee State University will present a lecture on In Search of the People Who Lived Here Before: from Historic to Prehistoric Significance at the Carter Mansion Site. This event will begin at 7 p.m. Please join us this evening for this unique opportunity to get a first- hand look at the most current research on these topics! This lecture is free and open to the public.
