On Thursday, students at Unaka Elementary received a special visit from some local heroes with an important message.
This week was National Fire Prevention Week and students at Unaka Elementary participated in a variety of activities throughout the week including a fire drill and a poster contest.
Firefighters with the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department visited the school on Thursday to discuss fire safety, smoke detectors and the importance of family emergency plans. The firefighters visited the classrooms to talk to children and answer the questions. The students also received some safety information to take home.

The students also got the chance to see a fire truck up close and check out all of the equipment firefighters use when they respond to an emergency.
As a special treat, the children got to try their hands at being a firefighter as they helped to operate a firehose.
Unaka Elementary Principal Jaclyn Wilson said she feels it is important to talk to the students about fire prevention and what to do in the event of an emergency.
Throughout the week teachers throughout the school have incorporated fire prevention and safety into their classroom activities, Wilson said. “We need to take every opportunity we can to do that,” she said. “Having the fire department come and talk to the students really helps to make it real for the children.
“We want to give a special thank you to the volunteer fire department for all they do.”
