Inmate workers from the Carter County Detention Center, from left, Stephan Phipps, Junior Lunceford, Dustin Austin, and James Walton, help to set up the books for the fall Friends of the Library Used Book Sale.

On Wednesday morning, the Friends of the Library began the work of setting up for their semi-annual used book sale.
Members of the Friends group received assistance from an inmate work crew from the Carter County Detention Center to help with the hard work of moving all boxes upon boxes of books from storage sheds to the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Center on Mill Street.
“We thank Sheriff Dexter Lunceford for allowing the boys to help us,” said Lilo Duncan, member of the Friends group and one of the coordinators for the book sale. “Without their help we could never get this done. We’ve tried before and we just couldn’t do it.”
Twice a year, the Friends of the Library host a used book sale as a way to raise funds to support the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library.
“These books are donated by the community,” Duncan said.
On Wednesday, the heaviest part of the work was completed in getting the books to the Rec Center. Typically, the sale features around 10,000 books.
Today, members of the Friends group will be hard at work sorting the books out into categories to get ready for the sale.
The used book sale will take place on Sept. 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Center located at 300 Mill St. Hardback books will be priced $1 each while paperbacks will cost 50 cents each.
Those who are members of the Friends of Library group will get to take part in special shopping hours before the sale this evening from 6-8 p.m. Membership to the Friends of the Library group is only $10 and interested parties can show up to the sale on Thursday evening and join to take part in the early sale Duncan said.
The Friends group is still accepting books for the sale, Duncan said. Those wishing to donate books to the sale can do so at the Rec Center today before the sale or during sale hours Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
All of the money raised during the book sale goes to support the programs and needs of the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library.
