After severe storms hit the area Friday, Carter County Proud saw success with their recent clean up on the Milligan Highway, according to the organization’s founder Edward Jordan.
“We had a few people call in and say they couldn’t make it due to damages at their home,” Jordan said. “That’s fully understandable. We still had a great turnout for the clean up.”
Saturday’s clean up worked in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s “Adopt-A-Highway” program, which is used as a tool for communities and organizations to work together on picking up litter in the area.
Jordan credited the work of the volunteers, which included U.S. State Representative Jon Lundberg, County Commissioner Scott Simerly, Ed Basconi, Mary Alice Basconi, John Fisher, and Kathy Jordan.
The volunteers bagged fourteen bags of litter and compiled two piles of large items, which included pieces ranging from couches to wooden pallets.
“I must brag that there was a lot less trash and debris then there was when we picked up on our first clean up,” Jordan said. “We are making a difference … lets keep it up.”
Jordan also thanked the volunteers that planned to attend the clean up but were unable to due to other reasons involving the weather.

Carter County Proud will host their regularly schedule bi-monthly meeting on July 26 at Smoke House BBQ Company, down the road from Happy Valley High School. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
The group will have a representative from the state’s division of water resources.
Jordan added the meetings are open to the public, and support from the community is encouraged.
