While staying in the business of providing the lights to the public, the Elizabethton Electric Department is working towards turning the lights off on cancer.
The Relay For Life of Carter County features the team named “Cancer Crushers,” comprised of various employees from the EED, including Alyssa Adams, Greg Dugger and Tammy Oxendine, a cancer survivor of five years.
“Cancer Crushers” is led by Loretta Hendley, team captain, who puts on a clinic while operating the team, Oxendine said, while praising the efforts of the entire team.
The team is comprised of various coworkers, friends and family members working at the goal of raising money to defeat cancer, she added.
“Cancer Crushers” are working at various projects to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
Funds have been raised by special breakfasts and lunches for EED employees throughout the year for donations with the sale of chocolate-covered pecans near Christmas. Also on the fundraising docket is the sale of beanie babies, sold seasonally, according to Oxendine.
Auctions have also proven to be a vital tool when raising funds for the “Cancer Crushers,” with their first cake auction being successful with over a dozen homemade cakes being donated. Along with the cake auction, a silent auction was created before the start of Relay time with tickets and passes provided to local vendors and gift baskets provided by local merchants.
Team members of “Cancer Crushers” stressed the importance of “Carter County-Opoly,” which will be an upcoming board game that will be sold at various locations to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The board game will offer various historic lessons on landmarks and information on businesses that apply for sponsorship.
The team is always in search of members, Oxendine said, while mentioning the Relay For Life is always looking for teams or individuals/businesses to become sponsors.
