Citizens of Carter County are encouraged to take in some family-friend fun Wednesday.
The Elizabethton Twins will look to continue their hot start to the season tonight with their home opener for the Appalachian League at Joe O’Brien Field against the Pulaski Mariners. Wednesday’s opener, a battle between East and West foes in the league, is Elizabethton Star Family Night – which allows free admission to the ball park courtesy of the paper.
“The Elizabethton Star has been our sponsor for many, many years and we appreciate what they do for the community,” Elizabethton Twins General Manager Mike Mains said. “This is a great night for families to come out for baseball, fun and it’s free to the public. Our community will have to chance to see what our team is all about.”
The contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. with Elizabethton Star sports reporter and Appalachian League historian Allen LaMountain tossing out the first pitch.
After six games away from home, wrapping up series with the Johnson City Cardinals and the Kingsport Mets, the team is looking forward to be back in Carter County, Mains added.
“You play that amount of games, it’s always good to be back home,” he said. “We’re looking forward to another exciting year of baseball at Joe O’Brien.”
While it’s right over the county line, the Twins have been busy inside the community, including stopping by a recent trip over to Bojangles Tuesday afternoon, Mains said.
While the Twins have been away, the fans haven’t forgotten about they squad, according to the GM.
“The fanbase seems very excited for this year,” he added. “Our fanbase is one of the best around. They always travel well and any time you could be back home … it’s always great. We’re expecting a high turnout tomorrow.”
This year marks the 42nd that the Minnesota Twins’ organization has been affiliated with Elizabethton.
