Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that sent a pedestrian to the hospital early Sunday morning.
Shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday, officers of the Elizabethton Police Department were dispatched to a report of a hit-and-run accident at 1436 West G St. When officers arrived they spoke with Richard Smalling, who lives at the home.
“Mr. Smalling stated he went outside to the edge of the roadway to retrieve mail out of the mail box,” EPD Officer Dustin Johnson said. “Mr. Smalling stated he was then struck in the left side of his body by a black vehicle that was traveling westbound.”
“Mr. Smalling stated when the vehicle struck him the impact knocked him out of his shoes,” Johnson added.
The Carter County Rescue Squad responded to the scene to treat Smalling, whom Johnson described as being “in obvious pain.” Smalling complained of pain and injuries to his neck, left arm, left hip and his back, Johnson said.
The CCRS transported Smalling to a local hospital for treatment.
