A wildfire that began near Sciota Road on Tuesday has grown from covering 100 acres of land to an estimated 320 acres on the border of Unicoi County and Carter County according to Forestry Service officials.
Around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Tennessee Forestry Division Technician James Heaton said crews from both the U.S. Forestry Service and Tennessee Forestry Division were within hours of getting the wildfire contained.
Currently no structures are in danger, Heaton said, adding firefighters are hoping to use fire lines to shrink and contain the fire in the mountains.
With cool air and the overcast skies, Heaton said Thursday’s weather was more favorable compared to Wednesday’s. However, he added, crews were still having to deal with some high winds. There had also been some rainfall in the area of the wildfire, but nothing substantial Heaton said.
