Dr. Seuss once said “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
On March 17, Central Elementary School is holding a special event to encourage not only their students to read more to know more, but the whole community. On that Thursday, from 3:45-5 p.m., Central Elementary will host Family Reading Night. The theme for the event is “Dr. Seuss Night.”
The event is free and open to the public, not just the students and their families.
“It’s open to the whole community,” said Central Elementary Assistant Principal Letha Carr. “We have activities for the children. We have all kinds of activities for the families to enjoy.”
The event will also feature Dr. John Taylor as a special guest storyteller.
Family Reading Night is part of Central Elementary School’s literacy initiative to promote reading to the students.
Carr said studies have shown that the more time students spend reading, the better they will perform in all academic areas because reading helps to improve both vocabulary and comprehension.
In addition to all the Seuss-themed fun and activities, families will also get a chance to take part in an activity that could one day help protect their children in the event something unthinkable were to happen.
Woodmen Life will have a booth set up to do DNA fingerprinting, Carr said.
“They are going to set that up for the children for free,” she said.
