A Carter County man faces two felony charges after police say he brandished a weapon at two people over the weekend.
Officers of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested Bobby Williams, 41, of Elizabethton on Sunday morning and charged him with one count of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated assault under domestic violence.
Deputies responded to a home on Brimer Road around 6 a.m. on Sunday after a 911 caller reported an armed subject at the home. The caller told 911 dispatchers that the man, who was later identified as Williams, had fled the home in a black Chevrolet pickup truck. CCSO Sgt. Issac Rhea found a vehicle matching the description given by the caller on Highway 19E and stopped it.
While Rhea conducted the traffic stop on the truck, Deputy Paul Morrell went to the home on Brimer Road and spoke with a man who said Williams came to his home around 6 a.m. and started a fight.
“(The man) stated that Mr. Williams produced a small pocket knife and (he) grabbed Mr. Williams in an attempt to control the knife,” Morrell said, adding the man showed him a small cut on his left hand which he said resulted from struggling with Williams over the knife. “The man then advised me that he observed the black barrel of a revolver poking out from Mr. Williams’ jacket and that Mr. Williams grabbed at it.”
Morrell said the man told him he grabbed Williams’ hand and told him to let go of the gun.
The man then told officers that Williams returned to his car and then pulled out the revolver and pointed it at his mother, who was standing on the porch of the home.
Officers spoke with a second woman who was at the home and she reported seeing Williams brandish the knife on the man.
“I then contacted Sgt. Rhea and advised him to place Mr. Williams under arrest for aggravated assault times two and have his vehicle towed,” Morrell said. “An inventory of the vehicle prior to towing produced a Gerber folding pocket knife resembling the description given by the victim and witness, but the handgun was not recovered.”
On Monday morning Williams appeared in Carter County General Sessions Court for arraignment. Judge Keith Bowers Jr. set Williams’ bond at $2,000 and scheduled him to return to court on April 5.
