GRAY – Guard Corbin Bernard scored the first 10 points of the game for North Greene as the Huskies built a 17-5 first period lead and cruised to a 65-36 win over the Unaka Rangers in the District 1-A consolation game played on Monday at Bobby Snyder gym.
“For whatever reason, we just were not ready to play,” said Rangers head coach Aaron Dugger. “Bernard scores 10 points out of the gate and we really didn’t make it hard on him. He’s a good shooter but we could have made it easier on ourselves.”
Free throws from Finn Wilczek to open the second and a deuce from Avery Weems gave NG a 21-7 lead to open the second stanza. Colton Chambers hit a bucket in the paint for Unaka’s only points in the second period at the 5:27 mark with the Huskies leading 26-7.
Another bucket by Wilczek gave NG a 28-7 lead before a deuce from Chambers ended the Huskies nine point run. Wilczek hit two more deuces for the Huskies and Bernard knocked down a trey as NG built a 37-15 lead at the 1:19 mark. That lead held through until the half with Bernard leading all scorers with 13 points with Chambers 10 points leading the Rangers.
Chambers took a hard fall at the 6:29 mark of the third period but left the court under his own power and returned shortly. NG outscored the Rangers 15-6 in the third period as the Unaka defense seemed to be unable to stop the Huskies from getting uncontested shots in the paint.
Jared Weems, Cameron Freshour and Wilczek each hit long range shots in the fourth quarter as NG built an insurmountable 61-25 lead at the 4:17 mark of regulation.
A bright spot for Unaka came in the fourth quarter when freshman John ‘Boy’ Ramsey heated up and hit four trey’s in the stanza for his 12 points which led all Unaka scorers.
“We just didn’t seem interested tonight,” Dugger said. “. . .I have to do a better job getting these guys ready to play. They may have been content to make the regional and a game on Saturday. We’ll have to go back and look at who we have next. We have played them both and had some success against each one.”
Bernard led NG with 15 points, followed by Wilczek 13 and Elijah Smith with 12.
