The Carter County Sheriff’s Office is warning area residents of a possible phone scam that has been reported to the agency.
According to Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford, his office is currently investigating reports by citizens who said they have received phone calls from individuals claiming to hold arrest warrants on the person and asking for money.
“These phone calls have been identified as being linked to a scam,” Lunceford said. “These scams are initiated by the caller identifying themselves as law enforcement and informing the victim that an arrest warrant exists for them or is being issued and seeking monies in order to stop this legal action.”
“No law enforcement or governmental agency will operate in this manner, nor will they seek fines or funds by phone,” he added. “If you receive such a phone call seeking money in reference to an arrest warrant, please contact your local police or sheriff’s department and advise them of this activity.”
Lunceford said any citizen who has concerns regarding a possible or existing warrant can inquire in person at the Carter County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Office located in the lobby of the Carter County Detention Center.
