Sanford Garfield Morton

Sanford Garfield Morton, 88, of Hampton, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at the Christian Care Center, Johnson City, after an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charles Jackson and Fannie Morton.

Mr. Morton served in the United States Army in the Military Police during World War II. He was retired as a Lead Burner with the O.G. Kelley Company, Johnson City. He was a member of Union Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Corrine Teague Morton, and two brothers, Wiley Morton Jr. and Claude Morton.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Glen E. Gouge, Hampton; a grandson, Jason Gouge and wife Amy; a great-grandson, Gabriel; and a brother, Clark Morton and wife June, Canton, N.C.

Funeral services for Mr. Morton will be conducted at 6 p.m. Sunday, January 31, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Richardson officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, February 1, in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Monday, will be Tom Reine, Jessie Irick, Mick Honeycutt, Stanley Honeycutt and Lance Forbes. Honorary pallbearers will be Keith Rouse, Chad Rouse, Luther Rouse, Arnold Hughes, Gary Teague, Leon Guy, Roy Gouge, Houston Timbs, Kenny, Eddie, Mark, Samuel and David Timbs, Carl Montgomery, Harold Montgomery, Clark Morton, Joel Forbes, Terry Stevens, Joe Curtis and Glen Bowers. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the doctors, nurses and staff of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center and the doctor, nurses and staff of the Christian Care Center. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at the residence. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Monday to go to the cemetery.
