Bobbie Wooten McLaney, 81, of Elizabethton, went home to be in the presence of the Lord on Thursday, January 14, 2016, from the Johnson City Medical Center. Bobbie was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late B.E. Wooten and Gwynnell Starling Wooten. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold McLaney; a sister, Dorothy Wood; and a niece, Cathy Armstrong Ogg.
Bobbie retired from the Bristol Tennessee School System as a teacher, after 35 years of service, and received several awards for her outstanding work as a teacher and educational leader. Bobbie was a great Bible Scholar and started each day with Bible study and prayer. She taught the Adult Fellowship Class at First United Methodist Church for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton and was an active member of the United Methodist Women Organization, serving as an officer. The First United Methodist Church was a major role in her life, as a child, teenager, and adult. She served as Chairman of the Bereavement Committee for many years.
Bobbie was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, Sycamore Chapter 168, serving as Worthy Grand Matron. She was a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens and loved the Senior Citizens Center and her fellow members there. She was a member of ASPCA and the United States Humane Society, because of her love for animals. She was also a member of Bristol, Tennessee Retired Teachers Association, an Alpha Delta Kappa member and National Sorority for Outstanding teachers.
Those left to cherish her memory include two sisters, Catherine Armstrong and her husband Bill, of Elizabethton, and Jane Hoff, also of Elizabethton; and a special nephew, Dr. William “Bill” Armstrong, of Elizabethton. Several other nieces and nephews survive, as well as her special friends, Frances Harkleroad, Lake City, Fla., Ruth Goodwin, Maxine Davidson, Betty O’Neal, Pat Blankenship, Penni Resplogle, Marcella Widner, Patsy Waligroski and Frank Maples, all of Elizabethton.
Friends may call at their convenience at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton between the hours of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Monday, January 18. A committal service for Mrs. Bobbie Wooten McLaney will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, January 18, in the Mausoleum Chapel of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with The Rev. Ray Amos Sr. officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Proffitt, Stan Ogg, Bill Armstrong and Dr. William “Bill” Armstrong. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the Mausoleum at 1:50 p.m. Monday. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to First United Methodist Church, 325 East E Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
