Julia Dozier Black

Julia “Judy” Black, 84, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2015. She was born on December 11, 1930 in Anderson, S.C., to Joseph P. Dozier and Ruthelma Marchbanks Dozier. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Joseph Miller Black Jr.
She is survived by five sons, Joseph “Joe” M. Black III and his wife Vicki, Duluth, Ga., James “Bill” W. Black, Santa Cruz, Calif., Robert “Bob” M. Black, Florence, S.C., and his wife Kathy, David D. Black, Elizabethton, Tenn., Charles “Charlie” E. Black and his wife Marlous, Columbia, S.C.; two daughters, Edie B. Hartman and her husband Frank, Jonesborough, Tenn., and Julia “Judy” Wilson and her husband Paul, Buford, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Chris Black, Katie Hartman Robinson, Joshua Black, Joseph M. Black IV, Jonathan Black, Whitney Wilson Peavey, Deborah Black and Jessica Wilson Hall; one great-grandson, Sullivan Robinson, and one great-granddaughter (soon to arrive), Emerson Peavey; and her beloved Yorkie, Toby.
She graduated from Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., in 1951. She was a member of the Elizabethton Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She also enjoyed membership in the Elizabethton Book Club and the Sycamore Stitchers.
Simply put, she was larger than life. Anyone who met her, fell in love with her South Carolina accent, quick wit, beautiful quilts, southern cooking, sweet tea, words of wisdom, and her loving devotion to family. She was a dear friend to many, and always knew just what to say to make everyone feel better as they sat around her big kitchen table.
Memorial services for Julia “Judy” Black will be held on Saturday, November 28, at 2:30 p.m. at the Elizabethton Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 111 Old Stoney Loop, Elizabethton, Tenn. Interment will be held at Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson, S.C., at a future date.
