It doesn’t matter which side of the fence passersby are standing on; the grass is looking a lot greener at the new Citizens Bank Stadium at Elizabethton High School.

Work started last week installing one of the more noticeable features of the new sports facility — the turf.

Crews will be working to finish out the process this week.

“Work is continuing to progress well,” Assistant Superintendent Richard VanHuss said. “The turf is one of the more obvious improvements that has been made. Up until now, most of the work that has been done has been ground work, or underground utilities. With (the turf) in, people can really see a difference at the site.”

The next major installation will be the home grandstands. The materials for the seating were delivered Thursday with installation to begin as early as this week. Construction crews are also working to put the finishing touches on the buildings and concrete work at the site.

With the turf and grandstands in place, the project will be around halfway completed, VanHuss said.

“When we get the turf down and the home stand complete, those are two huge pieces of the project,” he said. “Right now were are close to 40 percent complete. With those two pieces, it will push it up more. But with projects like this, the devil is in the details. People will see the stands and the turf and think we are almost finished, but there are still a lot of things to be done.”

Work started on the $4 million project in December after the groundbreaking ceremony was held. The goal is to have the stadium completed before the first EHS home football game in September.

“Right now, I would say that we are on schedule,” VanHuss said. “We are cautiously optimistic that we will get to be ahead of schedule as the work progresses.”
