The Summer Reading Program of the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library will not just teach reading skills this summer; it will also honor a wide variety of everyday heroes.
The program begins June 2 and will focus on a different type of everyday hero for each of the eight weeks of the program.
“We are going to look at all the different local, everyday heroes who are in Carter County,” Children’s Librarian Ashlee Williams said. “We are going to celebrate our local heroes.”
Some of the special guests will include local police officers, firefighters, EMTs, doctors and veterinarians. Other participants are still being finalized.
Because the program is open to children of all ages, the youngsters can choose whether they want to be active readers or to have the book read to them. Each time a reader finishes a book, they will note it on their log at the library. At the end of the summer, they will have a record of the books they finished.
Williams said attendance has remained steady each year for the summer reading program with an average of around 400 children sign up each year. Several summer school and day care programs also participate.
The program will meet at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesdays. The preschool group will continue to meet on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.
A teen program is also planned which will likely start later in the summer in July or August, Williams said.
