Members of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department, the Elizabethton police and fire departments and the Tennessee Highway Patrol will face off on the basketball court for the Carter County Relay for Life’s Battle of the Badges.

The Battle of the Badges will start at 6 p.m. Monday in the Elizabethton High School gymnasium.

“This is one of the biggest fundraising events we have,” event organizer Genna Price said.

Organizers expect to raise between $1,500 and $2,000 for the Carter County Relay for Life.

The battle will feature basketball games between the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Elizabethton Fire Department followed by a game between the Carter County Sheriff’s Department and the Elizabethton Police Department. The winners of the first two games will face off for the championship, and the two losing teams will play in a consolation game.

“We ask that people come out and support our teams,” Price said. “These men are volunteering their time to help raise money for a worthy cause.”

The crowd will have a chance to get in on the action during the special halftime show, volunteer and planner David Timbs said. Halftime will feature a free-throw contest between two audience members for a prize.

Relay volunteers will be selling $1 tickets for the chance to participate in the contest, Ward said.

Two people will be chosen to compete and see who can make the most free throws in 30 seconds. The winner will be given a gift card.

“It will be a fun-filled night,” Timbs said. “Everyone can come out to support the teams, but most of all to support the Relay for Life.”

Tickets are $5 for adults. Children who wear their school colors, and survivor’s who wear their purple survivor’s shirt will be admitted at a discounted rate, Timbs said. All proceeds will benefit the Carter County Relay for Life and concessions will be available.

The Relay for Life will also host the Miss East Tennessee Relay for Life pageant on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Happy Valley High School.
