Learning can be a painful experience and for a first year Happy Valley soccer team, Tuesday evening was just that.
Sullivan South scored six first half goals, including four from striker Colton Young, as the Warriors absorbed a 9-1 conference loss in boys’ soccer action.
Young scored in the seventh, 12th, 17thand inside stoppage time sandwiched around a goal from Creighton Shivell and one from Bryan Brockwell.
“In the first half, I think we had 19 shots, with 10 on goal,” Rebels head coach Keith Parker said. “We have to get to where we aren’t trying to blast every shot to the moon and where we place the ball where the keeper is not.”
“The first 13 minutes we were up four-nil and we blasted it pretty good. We kind of hit a lull and lost focus.”
South’s first goal came when Cade Westbrook fired a shot at HV goalkeeper Corbin Hennessee from his left. Westbrook’s shot struck the left upright and rebounded to Young on the far right side. Young fired a left footed shot for a clean goal that beat Hennessee to his right.
Young had an unassisted goal in the 12th minute as the HV back line failed to clear the ball out of the scoring box and young took possession just outside the box and scored on a screened shot for a 2-0 Rebels lead.
“We have to work together a little bit more,” Warriors head coach Carter Tucker said. “We have to work on keeping everybody in their positions more. Also, we were working with two rookie goalies.”
South (3-0-2 overall) made it 4-nil in the 17th minute when Young blasted a shot past Hennessee off a corner kick feed from Cole Killen. Killen sent his corner kick to the middle of the box from where Young fired and the ball never touched the ground until it came out of the net.
Brockwell got into the scoring column next with a left footed shot that went into the upper corner for a 5-0 Rebels lead and Young struck again in first half stoppage time, heading in a corner feed from Noah Mintz.
In the second half South got a goal from Noah Rutherford on a free kick from 20-yards out and near the home sideline. Rutherford’s shot beat HV second half keeper Wyatt Hall to his left and made it a 7-0 contest.
Alex Gonzalez tallied for South in the 62nd minute before HV (0-3) struck for it’s only tally of the contest. In the 70th minute, junior Zach Campbell took possession outside the box and raced past two Rebel defenders and fired a shot that beat Rebels GK Brad Burdine to the upper left corner of the net.
“I missed last week’s game, so this is just my second game,” Campbell said. “I usually play a defensive mid, so when I run up a lot of the time, I’ll get nervous and shaky. But tonight I just stayed calm and got the goal. Wyatt kicked it down from the box and Dylan (Burleson) passed it to me and I just ran with it.”
Gonzalez scored a flukey goal in the last minutes of play when he blasted a shot at Hall who punched it. The rebound came directly back to Gonzalez who didn’t miss the second time.
“I felt pretty good, especially in the last 10 minutes of the game,” Tucker said. “We were starting to push it up. That’s what I have been waiting on – seeing them do that. I think tomorrow we’ll spend some time trying to do the things they did well tonight – triangle passing and that stuff. That’s the good thing about playing schools that are past where we are here. You see some things that you can work and improve on.”
