MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (
Jan. 21, 2015) – In a mirror reflection of the first of the season, the Milligan College women’s basketball team secured their fourth conference win in a row after a 62-56 comeback defeat of St. Andrews University
on Wednesday evening. The Buffs (7-13 overall, 6-6 Appalachian Athletic Conference), who two weeks ago were sitting in a four-way tie for eighth place, moved into sixth with only two and a half games separating them from third place. St. Andrews remained tied in eighth with Montreat College after the loss. St. Andrews started off the game with a 17-5 run, but that would be the largest lead the Lady Knights would hold. With three and a half minutes left in the half, the Buffs rallied with an 11-0 run, taking the lead as the buzzer rang out with a second chance shot from Hayley Wyrick.Wyrick went on to lead all scorers with 21 points, 12 of which came in the second half, helping to keep the Buffs solidly in the lead for most of the second half.
Milligan extended that lead to as many as 17 points, but the Lady Knights charged back with five minutes remaining in the game. Going on a 10-2 run fueled by four fouls and six turnovers from Milligan, St. Andrews pulled within three points of the Buffs with 19 seconds remaining.
However, the Buff scored the final three points, securing the 62-56 victory.
Allison Jones followed Wyrick with 17 points, adding seven rebounds and three steals. Chelsey Weddle just missed a double-double, scoring 12 points with nine rebounds. Wyrick also nearly made a double-double, adding eight rebounds to her 21 points, marking her 24th straight game with double digit scoring.
Kayla Johnson led the Lady Knights with 17 points, and Alana Artis finished the game with a double-double, scoring 16 points and adding 10 rebounds.
The Buffs will continue their season with a road game against No. 10 Tennessee Wesleyan College on Saturday, Jan. 24. They will return home the next week to host Union College on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
