Police investigating a reported stabbing arrested a Hampton couple early Thursday morning on domestic assault charges.
Carter County Sheriff’s Department officers arrested Brandy Broyles, 32, on a charge of aggravated domestic assault. Her 31-year-old husband, Berret Broyles, was arrested and charged with domestic assault.
On Thursday around 3:30 a.m., CCSD Sgt. Nick Andes and other deputies answered a report of a stabbing in the Hampton area. The 911 caller, later identified as Berret Broyles, asked officers to meet with him at the intersection of highway 321 and Dennis Cove Road.
Berret Broyles told deputies he and his wife had been arguing all day and that while in their vehicle, she struck him in the face, cutting the bridge of his nose. After the couple arrived home, he said, she pulled a kitchen knife out of a drawer and came toward him. Fearing she was going to stab him, Berret Broyles told police he turned his body away from her but she was able to stab him in the upper left arm.
“Deputy (Brian) Smithpeters and I did observe a small, approximately half-inch wound to the upper left arm as an older laceration to the bridge of Mr. Broyles’ nose,” Andes said.
After speaking with Berret Broyles, Andes went to the couple’s home on Tollett Street and spoke with Brandy Broyles. She told Andes she and her husband had been arguing all day.
“Mrs. Broyles then admitted to ‘accidentally’ slinging her left hand at her husband’s face, causing the laceration to his nose,” Andes said, adding she reported being struck in the face by her husband during the argument. After she was hit, Brandy Broyles said she told her husband to leave and he then grabbed a knife but did not threaten her with it.
“Mrs. Broyles then alleges that she attempted to take the knife away when Mr. Broyles accidentally stabbed himself in the left arm while holding the knife in his left hand,” Andes said.
Brandy Broyles then allowed Andes inside the home and gave him the knife that had been used in the altercation.
After interviewing both Broyleses and reviewing the evidence he observed at the scene, Andes placed both the husband and wife under arrest.
The couple appeared in General Sessions Court before Judge Keith Bowers Friday and entered guilty pleas. As part of the plea agreement, the charge against Brandy Broyles was amended to simple assault.
Berret Broyles and Brandy Broyles were each sentenced to pay a $25 fine as well as court costs. Both were also ordered to complete 11 months 29 days probation as well as attend domestic violence counseling.
