Sharpshooting from senior Coby Jones kept Hampton in lead for the entirety of the game, during the Bulldog’s 59-43 win against the Longhorns Monday night inside of Johnson County High School.
Jones was on fire as he led the night with 29 points, while busting six threes for the game.
“The Lord was with us tonight,” Jones said. “Throughout the first and second quarters I struggled a little. Then I got open looks from my teammates, drawing people and then kicking it to me. And thankfully I was able to knock down the shots.
The Bulldogs got an early start with a 11 points run that was contributed to by two trey, one from Jones and Cheyenne Camillo each. Stanley Valentine and Stone Hutchinson were also in on the mix.
Troubled foul shooting from the Longhorns, who hit 2 of 7, would allow the ’Dogs to go into halftime with a 20-10 lead. Two more three pointers from Camillo and Jones also helped Hampton going to intermission with the edge.
“We came out and had a good start,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “Then we had a little lull.”
The Longhorns picked up a little steam in the third quarter, as Jose Guzman sank three triples to help Johnson County push to within 11 points of the Bulldogs.
The fourth quarter was the Jones show as he put 15 points, six of which came from threes, steering the Bulldogs to their 59-43 victory.
“We got it going there late in the late quarter,” Jones said. “I thought we started moving the ball real well. I thought that was a big key. When our kids were open they shot really well.”
Also scoring big for Hampton was Valentine (8) and Camillo (9). Hutchinson came on in with five.
On the Longhorns’ side, Chase Phillips and Guzman led with nine points each.
“Chase is one of our better players, and we are not going to win many games when Chase is held to nine points,” Longhorns head coach Austin Atwood said. “I was proud of our kids effort for the most part, we shouldn’t have turned it over as much. Ned (Smith) has a good team. If he gets them going at the right time they have a chance to go to the state tournament and possibly win it.”
