KINGSPORT — Holston Habitat for Humanity today will dedicate its 250th house.
In a partnership with volunteers from Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, Eastman Corp. and Kingsport “regulars,” the local Habitat affiliate constructed this milestone house as the completion of an eleven-house development in Kingsport.
“This house is a significant milestone and accomplishment for our affiliate”, said Art Pearce, executive director of Holston Habitat for Humanity.
Located at 120 Wampler St., the 1,040-square-foot home was built to Energy Star standards, which will provide the new family with manageable utility costs and minimal maintenance for years to come. As energy use skyrockets and cost-of-living expenses continue to escalate, Habitat for Humanity offers homeowners practical construction that not only significantly reduces energy costs, but will also improve environmental sustainability.
More than 100 volunteers came together to build this home over a four-week period. Holston Habitat for Humanity provides a construction manager and site supervisor for each of its homes, and many of the regular volunteers provide quality leadership and guidance for the novices who volunteer.
Additional project sponsors included the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Valspar Paints, General Shale and Dow Chemical.
The three-bedroom house marks Holston Habitat for Humanity’s 150th project in Kingsport. Homeowners Raymond and Quintessa Menya and their daughter will receive the keys to the house during the dedication ceremony Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
The Menya family house is one of 11 homes Holston Habitat for Humanity will complete by the end of the year.
Celebrating its 29th anniversary this year, Holston Habitat for Humanity has some exciting plans to build, rehab or repair a dozen or more additional houses in the coming year.
In addition to the homes built in the Tri-Cities area, the affiliate has provided funding for 237 homes built with Habitat for Humanity in other countries. As an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, the local affiliate has joined with other affiliates around the world to serve more than 1 million families worldwide with housing solutions.
