A county woman reported a safe containing $80,000 was stolen from her car in September.
According to a police report filed in the Carter County Sheriff’s Department Monday, Hilda Dugger came to the CCSD on Sept. 18 to report the theft.
According to the report, Dugger had been at a friend’s home, but then left with another individual in her vehicle. Dugger reported the friend drove her car and they stopped at a convenience store, at which time she retrieved $100 from a Sentry Fire Safe she had in the back seat. She told officers the safe contained a total of $80,000 and personal papers.
“She stated she placed the safe back in her vehicle and covered it with trash bags full of her clothes to hide it,” Deputy Amanda Little wrote in the report.
From the convenience store, Dugger reported to officers she and her friend went back to his house and stayed there until 5 a.m. when he took her car to drive to Food City to pick up another man. That man was supposed to drive Dugger back to her home because she was still “too intoxicated to drive.”
The report states that on the way to Dugger’s house they stopped at Food City to retrieve items from her vehicle that had been left in the parking lot. Dugger reported she couldn’t get a ride back to get her car so she had it towed to her house.
“Ms. Dugger stated she didn’t remember seeing her safe she since got the money out the night before,” the report said.
The report quoted Dugger saying she knew her car had been locked at Food City but had not been locked while at the friend’s house the night before.
