Funny man Jim Gaffigan will make a stop in Johnson City on his current tour as the Homecoming Comedian for East Tennessee State University.
Sponsored by ETSU’s Student Government Association, the show will be held Sunday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Freedom Hall Civic Center. Public ticket sales begin Monday, Oct. 13.
Gaffigan appeals to a wide range of audiences and has achieved accolades and awards for his stand-up comedy, acting and writing. Known for his clever, quiet style, he is one of the most popular touring comedians in the U.S., and his CDs and DVDs have reached platinum sales. He is a frequent guest on late-night comedy shows with David Letterman and Conan O’Brien, and his most recent Comedy Central special, “Obsessed,” was one of his most successful.
Much of Gaffigan’s humor comes from his family — he and his wife live with their five children in a two-bedroom New York apartment — and his observations on being lazy and loving food. Some of his best-known routines involve Hot Pockets, cake and bacon.
Gaffigan regularly appears on television and film. He has made guest appearances on many comedies and dramas ranging from “Portlandia” to HBO’s cult hits “Flight of the Concords” and “Bored to Death,” and has also played dramatic roles in all three versions of “Law & Order.” His big-screen credits include “Going the Distance,” “Away We Go” and “It’s Kind of a Funny Story.”
He is also an accomplished author. The title of Gaffigan’s first book, Dad is Fat, which spent three months on the New York Times bestseller list, came from the first sentence his oldest son wrote on a dry erase board at the age of 4 or 5. His next book, Food: A Love Story, is due out Oct. 21.
ETSU students may receive one free ticket and purchase up to three discounted tickets for $15 each through Oct. 12 with valid ID at the information desk on the second floor of the D.P. Culp University Center. Staff and faculty may purchase up to three discounted tickets for $15 each at the same location. No discounts will be available after Oct. 12.
Beginning Oct. 13, all ticket sales will be open to the public and may be purchased for $30 each at www.etsu.edu/concerts.
