The Sweet 16 is a popular milestone. But what about the Sweet 15?
The Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter is celebrating a Sweet Fixed 15 campaign through the end of August. Through the campaign, all pets that are already spayed or neutered can be adopted for $15.
ECCAS Director April Jones said the promotion was a way to reduce the number of adoptable pets still housed at the animal shelter.
“We have a lot of cats and dogs that have already been fixed,” Jones said. “We want to get our numbers down. We are always stretched hard in the summer.”
Jones said there were many different types of dogs and cats available for the $15 adoption fee through the promotion.
Some of those that qualify are:
• Sequoia, a 7-year-old shepherd mix. Jones said Sequoia is good with cats, dogs and children. He is house trained and vaccinated.
“He is just a really great dog,” Jones said. “We just love him;”
• Malarky, the “grinning lab,” a golden retriever and lab mix. Malarky is good with other dogs and children and is house trained.
“He is hysterical,” Jones said. “His lips pull back so it looks like he is smiling at you. He is another great dog;”
• Duke, a medium-sized brindle mix. Jones said Duke gets along well with other dogs and also described him as “great;”
• Jack, a purebred beagle, that is less than 1 year old;
“He came to the shelter with Jill, another beagle,” Jones said. “Jill was adopted and for some reason, he has not been adopted yet. He is really a very nice, sweet dog;”
• Tigger, an 8-year-old mixed breed;
• Dalmatian and Hardy, larger-sized beagle mix dogs;
Several cats also qualify for the Sweet Fixed 15:
• Ms. Kitty, a 4-year-old domestic short hair. Jones said she has been front declawed and would be an indoor pet.
“Ms. Kitty is 100 percent indoors,” she said. “She has never been outside a day in her life and she has been front declawed;”
• Two 9-year-old male cats. One is a black long-hair and the other is an orange long-hair. Jones said this duo would need to be adopted together. “They have lived together all their lives and shouldn’t be separated now,” she said;
• Lucy, a 7-year-old tabby. She has also never been outside and would prefer to stay an indoor-only cat;
• Lucky, a 5-year-old male tabby;
• Sophie, an “active” 9-month-old calico;
• Cat, an adult black cat; and
• Blossom, a 5-year-old black cat.
Jones said some of the cats that qualify for Sweet Fixed 15 are at the adoption center in Petsense. These include Milo, a three-legged cat; a male gray-tabby bobtail and a female gray cat.
“We have plenty of options,” Jones said. “There are so many pets that can be adopted for $15.”
Any pet not spayed or neutered can be adopted for $35. The additional $20 in the adoption fee covers the spay or neuter surgery.
