Suppose you gave a legislative breakfast and no legislators came?

Rather than face that prospect, the Chamber has postponed the annual Carter County Legislative Breakfast, scheduled for Friday morning at Roan Mountain State Park.

Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce Director Tonya Stevens said the decision to cancel the breakfast came after most state legislators could not confirm their attendance at the event.

“We understand they are still in session,” Stevens said. “They have hard work to do in Nashville. We understand there is a big job to do. We want them to be there to do what is best for the community and for the state.”

All who had already purchased tickets for the breakfast were given the option of a refund or to save the tickets for the rescheduled breakfast. Stevens said the goal was to get the word out to people who had planned to buy their tickets the day of the breakfast.

“We just wanted to get the word out,” she said.

“It was a difficult decision” to postpone the event, Stevens said. “We wanted to have the breakfast but the purpose of the event is to hear from the state leaders to get an update about what is going on. We want to make sure that if we have the breakfast, the panel is there for the discussion.”

With the state legislature still in session, the rescheduled date of the Legislative Breakfast has not been decided. Stevens said the chamber’s executive committee would meet next week to discuss the breakfast changes.

Once a new date has been selected for the breakfast, the location will be reviewed. Stevens said the chamber would still like to have the breakfast at Roan Mountain State Park, but that it would depend on availability
