The dispersed camping area known as Little Stoney will be closed from May 12 to May 22 for soil and water work.
U.S. Forest Service officials said work at the Watauga Ranger District site is to repair damage to the natural environment in the area and to improve the experience for national forest users.
The improvements will include better-defined areas to drive and park, leaving more natural settings for camping and more protection for vegetation and water quality.
Little Stoney will continue to be a no-fee area.
The area, locally referred to as Little Stoney, is on Watauga Lake east of Watauga Point on U.S. Highway 321.
The area will be closed to all visitors during the work.
Keith Kelley, Watauga District Ranger said, “I would like to thank national forest users in advance for cooperating with the temporary closure. The closure will allow this important work to be completed more safely and quicker, so visitors can return sooner.”
