The path to bass fishing’s biggest stage will run through the scenic Appalachian Mountains this fall as Watauga Lake in Carter County has been selected as the host site for the 2025 Bassmaster College Classic Bracket presented by Lew’s.

Set for Sept. 26-29, the tournament will bring eight of the nation’s top collegiate anglers to the deep, clear waters of Watauga Lake—a 6,430-acre highland reservoir nestled within the Cherokee National Forest. The winner will earn a coveted spot in the 2026 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Classic presented by Under Armour, a full season entry in the St. Croix Bassmaster Opens presented by SEVIIN, and use of a fully rigged Nitro boat and Toyota Tundra.

“This event is the pinnacle of collegiate bass fishing,” said Glenn Cale, B.A.S.S. tournament manager for the College, High School and Junior Series. “We’re thrilled to see these anglers chase their dreams in such a beautiful setting.”

The unique bracket format pits anglers against one another in head-to-head competition. The top four teams from the Bassmaster College National Championship will be split into eight individuals vying for the Classic berth.

Known for its population of both largemouth and smallmouth bass, Watauga Lake presents a challenging yet rewarding fishery. As part of Tennessee’s Bill Dance Signature Lakes program, the lake has benefitted from enhanced habitat and increased public access.

“Carter County Tourism is excited to showcase the scenic beauty and incredible fishing of Watauga Lake,” said Luke Freeman, director of tourism for the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce.

State tourism officials echoed that excitement.

“Watauga is one of our hidden gems,” said Dennis Tumlin, chief customer officer for the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see a smallmouth over 6 pounds weighed in during this event.”
