Dear Rev. Graham: We live in dangerous times. Young people are committing suicide; the elderly and sickly consider the right to die. Is the breath of life in our hands to give and take? – L.B.

Dear L.B.: Ultimately, our lives are in God’s hands; even the next breath we take is a gift from Him. If He were to withdraw His hand from us, life would end – despite the most strenuous medical efforts.

The psalmist said it well: “When you take away their breath, they die and turn again to dust” (Psalm 104:29, NLT).

This should remind us of our dependence on God. All too often, we assume that our lives and our futures are in our own hands. But they aren’t; they are in His hands. He gave us life, and someday, He will bring our time on Earth to an end.

This should also remind us that each day is a gift from God – a gift to be used wisely, joyfully, and for His glory. And it should remind us as well of an even greater gift – the gift of eternal life in Christ. We should express thanks to God for all that awaits us in Heaven.

The important question to ask ourselves is: Are we ready to die? Have we made our peace with God and His Son, Jesus Christ – the Life Giver?

While even in the darkest moment, before death snatches man’s last breath, God is willing to save a lost soul; but think of the sorrow of not having lived for the One who saves and brings abundant living while on Earth. Eternity is just a breath away. Everyone should ask: Am I ready to meet God?
