ROAN MOUNTAIN — A rare opportunity has emerged to own one of Roan Mountain’s most treasured historic properties.
The Church House, a meticulously crafted 1882 folk Victorian home, and the old Shell Creek General Store, located on the property, are now listed for sale by Century 21 Legacy.
Originally built by William and L. Cornelia Hardin Church, this four-bedroom home sits on 1.5 acres and offers a remarkable glimpse into Appalachian heritage. Nestled along what was once the route of the famed East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad — known locally as the “Tweetsie” — the Church House played a central role in Shell Creek’s development during the late 19th century.
William Church operated the on-site general store under the name “Church & Woodruff General Merchandise,” supplying the community with everyday goods and agricultural tools while also serving as the Shell Creek Post Office. The original after-hours mail slot still exists today, a testament to the property’s enduring charm. Directly across the tracks once stood the Shell Creek Depot, built and maintained by local residents to secure a railroad stop.
Following William Church’s death in 1889, Cornelia continued running the store with assistance from family and later her second husband, John Snider, until his death in 1914. The store then remained closed for more than 100 years before being briefly revived by the Kodak family in the 2010s. During their stewardship, the Kodaks have also hosted weddings and church gatherings in the barn behind the home, continuing the Church family’s tradition of community service.
“This property is more than just a home, it’s a living piece of East Tennessee history,” said Robert Sorrell, listing agent with Century 21 Legacy. “It would make an ideal venue for events, a unique homestead or even a boutique business for someone ready to write the next chapter of this legacy.”
The home has been well maintained with numerous updates, including newer appliances, a recently replaced heat pump and a new water heater.
This property is listed at $700,000.
