A dump truck caused significant damage to traffic infrastructure Thursday morning at the intersection of East Broad Street and North Sycamore Street, resulting in temporary road closures.
The truck was traveling west on Broad Street when its truck bed struck overhead utility lines and traffic control equipment. The impact downed multiple components, including traffic signal mast arms, fiber-optic cable and electrical lines.
City officials confirmed extensive damage to the intersection. Emergency response and city crews responded promptly to secure the area and assess the damage.
Elizabethton Electric System crews are working on site to restore power, with full service expected to be reestablished within three hours.
Contractors are en route to the scene to assist with the restoration of signal functionality. They are expected to work until temporary repairs can restore signal operations.
Due to the extent of the damage, the intersection of Broad Street and North Sycamore Street will remain closed until further notice. City officials have outlined temporary traffic alterations to redirect motorists.
Detours are in effect immediately and will remain active until the intersection can be reopened. City crews and traffic personnel are coordinating to maintain public safety and minimize delays.
Residents are urged to follow posted detour signs and use alternate routes as possible. Updates on restoration efforts and any changes to detour routes will be posted on the City of Elizabethton’s official Facebook page.
