With more than 90 teams and athletes from multiple states converging on the Vol Classic track and field meet Saturday in Knoxville, the Elizabethton Cyclones stayed grounded in their mission: improve on individual performances.
The result was a day filled with personal records and two new school records for freshman phenom Arvella Nave.
Nave, who already held the Elizabethton High School records in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs, shattered both marks with two standout races.
She ran 5:15.73 in the 1,600 to place eighth overall and followed with a 10th-place finish in the 3,200 at 11:18.59. Her previous bests were 5:17.26 and 11:37.48, respectively.
Sophomore Liahna Nave delivered a gold-medal performance in the women’s discus, topping the field with a throw of 130 feet, 10 inches.
In the field events, senior Diesel Russell also had a strong showing, earning eighth place in the boys discus with a mark of 165-10, continuing his consistent presence among East Tennessee’s top throwers.
The Cyclones also found success on the track in the sprint and middle-distance events.
Sophomore Chyanne Everett placed 21st in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 26.47 seconds. Fellow sprinter Naye Musa recorded a 100-meter personal best of 13.23 and added a time of 27.49 in the 200.
Braylon Britt led the Cyclone boys in the 100 meters with a time of 11.68. Teammates Aedin Vandyke and Wesley Taylor posted 11.98 and 12.37, respectively.
William Snodgrass represented Elizabethton in the boys 1,600, finishing in 5:03.03.
Coaches emphasized that while the meet drew stiff competition, the focus remained on individual progress.
With several athletes notching new personal records, the weekend was viewed as a success for a Cyclone squad peaking at the right time.
As the postseason approaches, the Cyclones will look to build on their momentum with continued improvement and strong performances from their standout athletes.
