This summer, East Tennessee State University will once again host an immersive, three-week experience that introduces students to the exciting world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). 

The Applied STEM Foundations Summer Institute, running June 9-27, offers two tracks – STEM Technology and Health and Technology – that allow students to explore future careers and sharpen real-world skills through engaging, hands-on learning. 

The cost to attend is $25, and lunch is provided daily. Students must enroll by May 15 to secure a spot. 

“Our goal is to help students discover what’s possible through STEM,” said Dr. Evelyn Roach, who coordinates the program. “This is an opportunity to explore different majors, interact with faculty and mentors and build confidence in a college setting.” 

Each track offers a unique pathway: 

• The STEM Technology track focuses on computing, engineering and digital media. Students rotate through these three areas, working with ETSU faculty and using high-end equipment in labs and studios. 

• The Health and Technology track centers on environmental health, radiologic science, dental hygiene and biology — fields that blend technology with health science and public service. 

Throughout the program, students participate in interactive lectures, lab sessions, field trips and project-based activities that culminate in a capstone presentation. The experience is designed not only to introduce students to STEM careers but also to build soft skills like teamwork, time management and communication. 

The program is open to students in eighth through 12th grade. No prior STEM coursework is required. 

“This program gives students a real taste of college life while helping them find their passion,” said Roach. “It’s rigorous, inspiring and a lot of fun.”
