From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham
Dear Rev. Graham: I lost my job due to downsizing and am devastated because I always did my job well. It seems unfair but at the same time, I feel free to pursue other avenues that interest me more. My colleagues who also lost jobs tell me I should join a class-action suit for unfair treatment but I really don’t want to waste my years of productivity, though I may never get another job with the title I’ve earned over the years. Should I fight for something that could lead me nowhere or just press on? – L.J.
Dear L.J.: Personal worth is not what we do for a living, but how we live. Many people have lost one job only to find that this was God’s way of redirecting their lives. Seeking God and acknowledging His provision – for He is the Source of all things – reminds us that He does lead and guide us.
While a person’s self-esteem is often tied to his/her work, losing a job can be very traumatic. When someone is laid off or fired, it can have a serious psychological effect. In our culture, people often define themselves by the job they hold, being introduced by their job title. This usually happens when their work is in a field that is highly visible or exciting. But a person’s job tells you nothing about a person’s character or value.
This can also be an important time for spiritual growth. Relying on the Lord to reveal the next step in life shows trust in Him because He promises never to leave or forsake us (see Hebrews 13:5).
